Stop to Smell the Flowers

For my first full day in the Netherlands Jay I did one of the most Dutch things possible. Jay and I took a day trip to Keukenhof, a giant park filled with millions (yes, millions) of flowers. Holland has a certain reputation for having beautiful fields of tulips and I wanted to make sure I saw them this time. The season is brief and I lucked out getting there before it ended. I was there less than a month ago and the park is already closed until 2017!

When we arrived, I was a little skeptical because there were hundreds of people around us and not one of them was under the age of 65. But we continued into the park, eager to see some Dutch tulips.

I have never seen so many floral displays and I don’t think any other place will surpass Keukenhof in variety. They don’t solely show tulips and you could see how carefully each flower was planted into it’s spot.

I am not a flower fanatic by any means, but seeing so many flowers at once was stunning. There was no way to fully capture the beauty of these displays, but that didn’t stop me from trying to document a few. I took over 100 pictures the first day of all different flower types blooming all over Keukenhof!

After a couple hours we had exhausted ourselves within the park and decided to go for a nice bike ride past several flower fields to the beach. I think the only way I would have felt more Dutch is if I was wearing wooden shoes and eating some cheese in between flower fields!

On our way to the beach: after the bike “incident” and well before my butt start throbbing from the uncomfortable bike seat!

After was seemed like eternity, we successfully returned from our trip to the beach. I was jet-lagged, exhausted, and my butt hurt from the uncomfortable bicycle seat, but I had survived the 11 mile ride! As much as I whined and complained I did actually have a great time and it ended up being one of my favorite days on vacation! We saw flower fields, the beach surrounded by giant sand dunes, some massive deer, and even some bunnies along the way. This was such a perfect way to kick start my visit with Jay and to embrace a little more of his culture. But I don’t think I’ll be back on a bike anytime soon….
