Happy New Year!!!
I spent the first day of 2017 on a plane, traveling back home after a holiday visit with Jay. Traveling when sick is a miserable experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. After 18 hours I finally made it home to get some sleep.
Today is the second day of 2017 (already?!) and it’s the perfect day to reflect on my choices of last year and form resolutions for the year to come.
2016: A Year in Review
Last year seems like a blur but I remember that Jay had left the night before, leaving me alone to ring in the New Year. I spent January first of 2016 thinking about how awesome our visit had been, celebrating both my birthday and Christmas with Jay for the first time. From there, the spring was a bit of a blur. I celebrated at my brother’s and sister-in-law’s baby shower before traveling to Europe in April to see Jay. During the trip, I became an aunt to two tiny and beautiful babies. Sadly, after coming home to see them we lost my niece to complications of premature birth. For the rest of 2017 and even now a small piece of my heart feels the pain of that loss.
But 2017 took a turn for the better when I traveled to Maine for my sister’s bachelorette party. We celebrated her upcoming marriage with a sunset cruise, seafood, and the sites of Portland. A few weeks later, I watched my sister marry the love of her life and gave my first-ever MOH speech (eek). Their wedding was a wonderful celebration of love and friendship, with the smallest personal touches that made it totally unique to them. I was so glad Jay was able to share this occasion with me and my family.
The next month was filled with work, as my big deadline was October 17th. I tried my best to balance work and fun since Jay was still visiting at that time. He left shortly after my deadline and I was back to my old routine. Nothing too exciting happened again until Thanksgiving where I got to see my family. The year ended with a small pre-Christmas celebration with my family followed by a trip to the Netherlands for the holidays. I spent the final week of 2016 visiting Jay and taking part in his family’s holiday traditions….but more to come on that later!
Overall, 2016 was one of the more hectic years for me. With happy and sad news all jumbled into one year, it’s hard to remember some of the smaller details of the year. If I learned one thing from 2016 it’s how precious family truly is and that I want to make an effort to see mine more often than I have been in the past.
2017: The Year to Come
I haven’t made any true resolutions for 2017, since I’ve never stuck to them in past years. But I do have a few things I’d like to see happen in the upcoming year. 2017 will be about growth, both personally and with my relationships. Jay will hopefully be moving back here to live with me in the next few months, I will find growth at work, and spend more time with my family. I hope to adopt a healthier lifestyle (particularly regarding a more regular exercise schedule) and also take up a new hobby….2017 I’m ready for you!
